In W.P. No. 6856 of 2018, the petitioner seeks the court’s direction for initiating direct recruitment to the post of Associate Professors in Government Law Colleges in Tamil Nadu. Upon reviewing the affidavit from the third respondent, the court found that a significant number of teaching positions, both for Associate and Assistant Professors, remain vacant. Notably, 19 out of 20 Associate Professor posts and 70 Assistant Professor posts are unfilled, which the court deemed unacceptable as it compromises the quality of legal education. The Hon’ble Judge, Battu Devanand, expressed serious concern over the detrimental impact of these vacancies on students’ careers and emphasized that the government must take immediate action. If the vacancies cannot be filled, the judge suggested it might be better to close down the institutions rather than operate without qualified faculty. The Law Secretary of Tamil Nadu is directed to present a concrete plan by 15.10.2024 for filling these vacancies in a timely manner.
