Secretary of the Athikesava Bhaktharkal Seva Trust based at Kanyakumari, in his petition stated the trust is working to safeguard old temples and properties. It is also taking steps to recover the properties from encroachers by submitting complaints and representations. He said that all the temples in Kanyakumari district were under the control of Cochin-Travancore Samasthanam and after the states’ reorganisation, these temples and its properties were transferred to Tamil Nadu. At present, there are 490 temples under the control of the Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR and CE) department in the district. Though these were transferred long back, all the documents are still in Malayalam and have not been translated to Tamil so far. Due to this, the HR and CE department officials are unable to identify the temple lands and prevent encroachments.Several properties are currently being encroached or in illegal possession of individuals and the officials are not even aware of it. He further submitted that it also creates a huge loss of revenue to the HR and CE department. Though he has submitted several representations to the authorities since 2015, seeking to translate the documents, no steps were taken so far. Hence, he moved the high court Madurai bench. When the petition was heard on Tuesday, a division bench of justice M Duraiswamy and justice T Ravindran gave the direction.Act on plea to translate temple documents into Tamil: High courtX Start your day smart with stories curated specially for you Your email address GET IT TOIOPEN APP CITY Act on plea to translate temple documents into Tamil: High court TNN | Updated: Dec 4, 2019, 12:37 IST AA Representative image MADURAI: The Madras high court has directed the state government to take appropriate action on a public interest litigation (PIL) which sought to translate the land documents of 490 temples in Kanyakumari district from Malayalam to Tamil.
