In his petition, G Thalapathi, DMK district secretary, stated that Karunanidhi had served as CM for five terms between 1969 and 2001 and held the office of the state chief minister for 6,863 days, the longest in the state. He has won all the elections he contested. After Karunanidhi died on August 7, 2018 aged 94, his party functionaries decided to erect a statue for him at Madurai. He stated that installing his statue would not only be a matter of pride for the party but also for the city as it will amount to honouring a person who had dedicated his life to the literary world and politics. He had sent a representation to the authorities concerned seeking permission to erect a statue in Madurai on September 3, 2018 and a reminder letter too dated December 6. However, no steps were taken by the officials in this regard.Even as his representation to erect the statue is pending for nearly 15 months, the authorities have permitted to erect a statue of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa at K K Nagar. When the petition was heard on Monday, Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana sought response from the state government and adjourned the case to January 2 for further hearing.LATEST VIDEOSFather of Muzaffarpur woman, who died after being set on fire, demands justice01:32Death penalty to Kuldeep Sengar, my daughter’s culprits will send strong message: Nirbhaya’s mother01:52Delhi Police releases video showing Joint CP appealing Jamia protestors for peace01:2710 people arrested, no one is student: DCP on Jamia incident01:04Amit Shah hits out at Kejriwal over regularisation of unauthorised colonies02:17‘Nirogi Rajasthan’ aims at creating disease free, healthy environment: CM Gehlot01:13Download the Times of India News App for Latest City NewsStart your day smart with storiescurated specially for youAdd CommentTOP TRENDSAP CapitalNirbhaya caseAmit ShahWhat is CAA BillNarendra ModiChandrayaan 2Citizenship billIND vs WI 2nd ODICAB protestCBSE Date SheetJipmer PG ResultsIncome Tax Rate CutSensexBihar Deled ResultInfosys NewsWhat is NRCNewsHoroscope todayLongwalks AppOrder NewspaperABOUT US | TERMS OF USECopyright © 2019 Bennett, Coleman & Co.
