Madurai: Madras high court has directed police officials to produce before the court on Thursday the DMK councillor of ward 8 in Mudukulathur panchayat union who was allegedly abducted. The order was given on a habeas corpus petition filed by the councillor’s son S Raja, a resident of Ramanathapuram district.

He said his father Sathaiah had contested the recent local body election on December 30 for the councillor’s post as a DMK candidate and won. After the results on Januray 2, his father returned to his house at Vaithiyanenthal. The next day, he went out around 5 am after informing his mother that he was going to meet some friends. However, he did not return and when his mother contacted him over phone, he informed her that he had been abducted and detained by four people.

Raja said when he came to know about the incident, he immediately informed the inspector of Mudukulathur police station and sought steps to rescue his father. However, there was no response. He further stated that his father was brought by the people to the block development office for the swearing-in ceremony on January 6 but was taken away after that. He said that four “highly influential” people had detained his father to prevent him from voting to elect the chairman of Mudukulathur panchayat union on January 11.
Though he and members of DMK lodged a complaint at the police station, the officials merely registered a community service register, which prompted him to the habeas corpus petition. When the petition was heard on Wednesday, a division bench of Justice T Raja and Justice B Pugalendhi directed the police officials to produce the petitioner’s father before the court on January 9 failing which the Ramanathapuram superintendent of police should appear before the court to explain about the status of the case.
