At A FUND-RAISING EVENT FOR CANCER INSTITUTE (W.I.A) held at Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram today while honouring the Chief Guest Hon’ble Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul.
    ————————————————————————

Distinguished guests & friends, before i honour the chief guest for the evening’s function honorable Mr justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul I wanted to place on record before you the important role of justice Kaul in saving this Anna centenary library. As your aware this library, which is Asia second largest library, which even caused Hillary Clinton to be awestruck when she visited Chennai, was sought to be closed and converted for another purpose by the Tamilnadu Government in the year 2011.

Immediately cases were filed before the Madras High Court and stay was granted by the High Court against the conversion.

But it was Justice Kaul’s Bench in the year 2015 that passed the final order holding that the library cannot be shifted. Not only that, he issued a continuing mandamus appointing two advocate commissioners both of whom are now sitting judges of the High Court – Hon’ble Mr Justice M Sundar and Hon’ble Ms Justice PT Asha to inspect and monitor the maintenance of the library.

Friends When Dr Kalaignar Karunanidhi was a Chief Minister , this magnificent building was constructed at the cost of 179 crores in the year 2010.

Apart from this Justice Kaul bench order made about 179 staffs Permanant who were working temporarily against the sanctioned posts in this Anna Centenary Library.

Therefore I wanted to say but for him, we would not be having this grand function in this historic monument of knowledge.

I am thankful for the opportunity to honour him within this building.
