In his petition, N Thangappan, the president of Sree Adikesava Seva Trust, stated that the temple situated at Thiruvattar is one of the 108 divya desams. Though it is under the control of HR & CE department since 1960, no proper records have been maintained by the officials about the jewels and ornaments of the deities.REMOVE ADSDue to this, the temple employees including archakars started to loot the ornaments. After the people staged a protest and submitted complaints repeatedly in 1992, CB-CID officials from Tirunelveli conducted an inquiry and subsequently several people including three archakars were convicted. He stated that though archakars of the temple were convicted for looting the ornaments of the temple, their successors are still allowed to perform pujas at the temple. It was in this context that the petitioner moved the HC Madurai bench seeking to publish the list of ornaments and also display them to the public by adorning the deities with them. He further sought to remove such archakars whose family have bad antecedents from the temple. To this, a division bench of Justice M Duraiswamy and Justice T Ravindran directed the state government to file a counter and adjourned the case to a further date for hearing.
