Senior Advocate A.Sirajudeen appeared and argued for Ismail Sheriff. After hearing Senior advocate A.Sirajudeen, the Supreme Court issued notice to the police and also suspended the sentence imposed upon him by the Madras High court.

Supreme Court suspends Sentence of a Revenue Inspector convicted by High Court for corruption
Ismail Sheriff who worked as Revenue Inspector in Salem taluk office was prosecuted by the Vigilance and anti corruption for accepting bribe of Rs.1,000 to issue free house site patta to the poor. At the time of accepting bribe, he was caught red handed by the police. In the trial, the Sessions court disbelieved the evidence regarding demand and acquitted him. As against the acquittal, the State preferred appeal before the Madras High Court. It was heard by the Justice Velmurugan. On 15th Feb, 2023, the High Court had allowed the appeal and convicted Ismail Sheriff and sentenced him to undergo 1 year imprisonment and also a fine of Rs.10,000.
As against the conviction and sentence, Ismail Sheriff preferred an appeal to the Supreme Court. The appeal came up before Justice Surya Kant and Justice JK Maheshwari on 3rd Mar, 2023.
