When I was part of the Madras High Court Division Bench whicb heard the matter earlier, I personally visited Tuticorin and surrounding areas and found the degradation of environment due to the effluents let out by the plant and the pollution in Air and water due to which the people were put to health hazard.
After the closure was ordered earlier, the Supreme Court permitted to operate by imposing stringent conditions which were also not followed by the plant administration.
Hence the people in that area started protest and TN Government ordered the closure of the plant which was again considered by the Madras High Court and upheld the order of closure by the government of TN.
Now the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal by appreciating the Madras High Court in considering the pollution aspect meticulously.
It is a great relief to the public in Tuticorin.
This judgment is a re affirmation of the principle that life and health of citizens is more important than that of economic interest of the state.
