2nd International Conference on Peace and Conflict Resolution

The 2nd International Conference on Peace and Conflict Resolution took place via Zoom online platform (as well as was live casted on Youtube and Facebook) on 24th October 2021, organized by Madras Development Society in collaboration with Sattakadir Tamil Law Journal. Due to the pandemic, the Conference was held online where esteemed speakers across the globe participated and presented their speech.

The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin sent his best wishes for the success of the Conference. Dr. V.R.S. Sampath, the President of Madras Development Society and Editor, Sattakadir organized the enlightening Conference and delivered the Welcome Address. Thiru S. Raghupathy, Honourable Law Minister of Tamil Nadu delivered the Inaugural Address and remarked that resolution is a faster tool in justice delivery system. Dr. V.R.S. Sampath also made a request to the Honourable Law Minister to establish a School for Peace and Conflict Resolution in Tamil Nadu under the aegis of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

Hon’ble Justice Mr. Bhaskaran, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Human Rights Commission chaired the Session and delivered the Special Address on Peace and Conflict Resolution as well as the Concluding note of the Session. Dr. Chandrika Subramaniam, Principal Solicitor and Barrister, High Court and Supreme Court of Australia, shared her views on international mediation.

Hon’ble Justice Dr. Vimala, Member State law Commission of Tamil Nadu presented her insightful address on Civil disputes and mediation and the amendment on institutional arbitration. She also stated that Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Arbitration, in particular, is one of the effective mode for speedy disposal of cases.

Dr. Joseph Bock, Director, School of Conflict Management and Peacebuilding, Kennesaw State University, United States expressed that Alternate Dispute Resolution can be a solution to resolve disputes between polarized nations. Dr. Mukesh Kapila, Professor of Global Health & Humanitarian Affairs, University of Manchester, UK, shared his views on peacekeeping in view of the United Nations charter and opined that countries should have self-reflection on their national policies in the international paradigm.

Dr. Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi, Former Principal Advisor to UNIDO, Vienna, presented his edifying address on vision and action in the UN and his remarkable efforts in alleviating poverty in the international arena, and his genuine efforts in identifying and progressing the life of a victim of conflict was truly inspiring. Mr. Parthiban Shanmugam, Lawyer, Atlanta, US, shared his address on hybrid warfare with emphasis on Belarusian economy and the conflict between European Union and Belarus.

Dr. Saravanan, Chairman, Central Law College, Salem, made his presentation on the current scenario of violation of human rights in Afghanistan after Taliban takeover and the functioning of the United Nations in Afghanistan in promoting world peace. Dr. Vijayalakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Criminal Law, Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, shared her outlook on genocide and its wide ambit in terms of the Geneva Convention in relevance to armed conflict.

Mrs. Adhilakshmi Logamurthy, Advocate, Madras High Court, shared her views on mediation in family related issues. Mr. Koshy O. Thomas, Lawyer, New York, and President of the American Tamil Association, New York, shared his inputs on peace and peaceful negotiations in this Conference.

‘The Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela International Award on Peace and Conflict’ was presented to Ms. Ela Gandhi, the grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi for her extraordinary accomplishments in social work being an anti-apartheid activist. The institutional award – Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela International Award on Peace and Conflict was presented to School of Conflict Management, Peacebuilding and Development of Kennesaw State University, Georgia, US in view of the institution’s contribution to Conflict Management and Peacebuilding, and as an encouraging initiative to provide global education to Asian students in the field of peace and conflict resolution. The Conference concluded with Vote of Thanks by Ms. R. Prem Rajakumari, an Advocate of Madras High Court and Alumnus of Jindal Global Law School, NCR of Delhi who thanked all the speakers, participants, organizers, award recipients and viewers for the success of the intellectual Conference.
