Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt has told Madras high court that it took possession of the 160.8 acres leased out to Madras Race Club (MRC) on Sept 9 and sought to modify advocate-general P S Raman’s earlier submission that the state had issued only termination notice to the club and not taken possession of the land.

The submissions were made on Thursday, when a civil suit moved by MRC challenging the termination of the lease came up for hearing.
The club moved another application seeking time to hand over possession of the land to the govt. The club wanted the court to consider its application on an urgent basis since Sept 24 is the last date to hand over possession of the land.
However, when the suit was taken up for hearing, senior advocate P Wilson representing the revenue department submitted that there was no urgency in the issue as the land had already been taken possession of by the govt.

To this, senior advocate P H Arvind Pandian pointed out to the court a submission made by the AG before a division bench on a plea moved by the club challenging the action of the govt that the possession was yet to be taken.
Recording the submission, Justice R M T Teekaa Raman wondered whether the revenue department is disputing the submission made by the AG, who is a constitutional authority.
To this, additional advocate-general J Ravindran and Wilson informed the court that a modification petition had been filed before the division bench to modify the submission made by the AG, which is yet to be listed.

Recording the submissions, Justice Teekaa Raman said: “You (govt) wanted to tie the hands of the division bench by AG’s submission and now you want the submission to be lifted.” The court then adjourned the hearing of the suit to Sept 23, for the department to file its counter.

Chennai: A photo journalist from The Times of India, covering the encroachment removal on the Besant Nagar beach, was targeted, abused and manhandled by the encroachers. The large posse of police personnel did little to prevent the abuse.

Worse, when this correspondent took the incident to the knowledge of R Ponkarthik Kumar, deputy commissioner of police, Adyar, he replied: “You (TOI) raked up the issue …
1×1 polls
and won’t they be agitated? You should not have gone there (near the protestors). We did our job in protecting the GCC officials.”
However, responding to the DCP’s tepid response to the reporter, Chennai city commissioner of police A Arun said, “I will conduct an inquiry.
If this is true, we will not take it lightly.”
Earlier in the day, TOI’s photo editor L R Shankar was gheraoed by around 20 belligerent encroachers, mostly women, who obstructed the encroachment removal operation on the beach near Arupadai Veedu Murugan Temple. They pulled at his shirt, bag and tried to snatch away DSLR camera, even as the police and GCC officials watched.
One man came and held the journalist by his collar and shouted, “you took the photo of the construction last time. It is because of you this is happening.”

‘Early tracking, surgery key to treat aortic aneurysm’

‘Early tracking, surgery key to treat aortic aneurysm’

Chennai: Eight years ago when she was in her late 40s, Abirami* was told her breathlessness and discomfort were due to a leak in a valve that regulates blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body.

The cause was Marfan syndrome, a a genetic disorder that weakens the aorta and increases the risk of life-threatening aortic aneurysms and dissections.
1×1 polls
“Aortic aneurysms, where the body’s largest artery swells or bulges, are especially dangerous for those with Marfan syndrome, who are often younger than a typical patient. If left untreated, this condition can be fatal,” said Dr V V Bashi senior cardiac surgeon and director and senior consultant at Institute of Cardiac and Aortic Diseases, SIMS Hospital.
She underwent the Bentall procedure, a complex operation where surgeons replaced the ascending aorta (the upper part of aorta) and the aortic valve. Between 2023 and 2024, her daughter and son came into the emergency room with the same problem. In 2023, her 19-year-old daughter underwent the David procedure, also known as valve-sparing aortic root replacement, where surgeons repaired aortic root aneurysms.
In less than six months, her brother, who was a year younger, underwent the Bentall procedure.
“They have all recovered well, but may require constant monitoring to ensure they don’t have another rupture,” said consultant Dr Mohammed Idhrees.
Doctors have treated at least three other family clusters on World Aortic Dissection Awareness Day (Sept 19).
This hereditary disorder affects one in 3,000 to 5,000 people and is often associated with tall stature, long limbs and a predisposition to serious aortic complications.
Marfan syndrome affects approximately two lakh people in the United States. “Given that India’s population is roughly three times that of the US, it would be reasonable to estimate that at least 600,000 people in India could be living with this condition,” Dr Bashi said.
“It is important to diagnose these diseases and treat them to prevent complications, including death,” he said. (*name changed)
