Make Tuesday evening memorable,
Take part in a Bharati special.

Dear Southerners,

Subramania Bharati died some 100 years ago at the age of 39. A phenomenal poet, a journalist, a polyglot who knew 14 languages, a freedom-fighter, a social reformer, he was one of Tamil Nadu’s greatest sons, with a profound impact on literature, cinema, politics and social life. Many memorable film songs are based on Bharati’s lyrics.

His centenary last September was celebrated with a slew of publications, contests, awards and special projects.

At our meeting of Tuesday, January 11, 2022, Mr Vijayaraghavan Narasimhan, 63, an advocate by profession, a prolific author, and a lover of music and poetry, will recall Bharati’s life and achievements and his contemporary relevance.

Mr Narasimhan follows the dictum “To be a good lawyer, read everything other than law with interest and passion”. Apart from law, he writes on politics, Carnatic music, sports, societal concerns etc.

A distinguished advocate of the Madras High Court, he is on the panel of most insurance companies and has written several books on motor and marine insurance. In 2020, he wrote a much-acclaimed book on Constitution and its Making – Musings, Anecdotes and Episodes. Last year, he published a book on Sam Manekshaw’s Beloved Armed Forces.
He is a resource person with the Tamil Nadu Judicial Academy (run by the Madras High Court) and the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal (run by the Supreme Court).

Mr Narasimhan writes perceptive, insightful and highly readable articles and reviews on Carnatic music. He says he grew up in a musical ambience. His mother was an amateur singer, his father a serious rasika. He was a regular for a long time at concerts of the Music Academy and the Narada Gana Sabha and wrote often about them in Deccan Chronicle, OpIndia (a web journal) and other media.

His interest in Subramania Bharathi was kindled in Gopalapuram Boys High School and continued in Vivekananda College. A keen debater in English and Tamil, Narasimhan often drew on Bharati’s writings, and avidly collected literature on the great poet. He feasted on the books and articles about Bharati during his centenary month of September 2021.

During the past year, Narasimhan has himself written a series of entertaining blogs and articles on Bharati, that have won him many fans and several offers from publishers in English and Tamil for a book on Bharati.
On Tuesday, Narasimhan will bring Bharati vividly to life with facts, anecdotes and songs. Not to be missed!
