Supreme Court initiates suo motu case after Justice V Srishananda’s controversial comments
The Court also sought the assistance of Attorney General (AG) R Venkataramani and Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta in the matter.

The Supreme Court on Friday took note of the controversial comments made by Karnataka High Court judge Justice V Srishananda. (IN RE: Remarks by High Court judge during Court Proceedings)
A bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant and Hrishikesh Roy sought a report from the Karnataka High Court Registrar General on the same.
The Court also sought the assistance of Attorney General (AG) R Venkataramani and Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta in the matter.
“The attention of the Court has been drawn to media reports pertaining to certain comments which have been made by a Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, Justice V Srishananda, during the conduct of judicial proceedings … At this stage, we request the Registrar General of the High Court of Karnataka to submit a report to this Court after seeking administrative directions of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka, in regard to the subject matter which has been referred to above. This exercise may be carried out in the next two days and a report be submitted to the Secretary General of this Court, in the meantime”, the top court directed.
The Court said it may lay down some basic guidelines, and kept the matter next for September 25 at 10.30am.
Justice V Srishananda
Two videos of Justice Srishananda had gone viral on social media.
In one video, he is seen referring to a Muslim dominated sub-locality in West Bengaluru as ‘Pakistan’.
In another video, he is seen reprimanding a woman lawyer for answering a question put to the counsel for the opposite party.
The judge goes on to tell the woman lawyer in jest that she seems to know a lot about the opposite party, and that she might even reveal the colour of his undergarments next.
