When Soli Sorabjee took over as the Attorney General of India in 1989, he said that he did not see his role as that of a _“hatchet-man”_ (a person carrying out an unpleasant assignment) of the Government of the day, and that he was the Attorney General of the Country and not of the Government.

Responding to his statement, his mentor *Palikhivala* wrote, _“I meant to write to you to congratulate you on your appointment as the Attorney General. But after reading your public statement, I would like to congratulate India on having you as the highest law officer of the Government. The greatest glory of the Attorney General is not to win cases for the Government but to ensure that justice is done to the people”._
