Judge Suthantheram: Well written article by Justice Parthiban. At the same time I feel reducing death sentence to life imprisonment is not totally wrong. Death sentence is to serve as deterrent, but in fact in rape and murder cases is not so. It is due to some animal instinct.

On reading the judgment I noticed a flaw – sorry not flaw- a wrong approach. It was decided on other reasons to commute death sentence to life sentence but to decide whether life sentence should be for remaining life or 20 years, the saint and sinner quote is made which is inappropriate.
If the sentence had remained as life sentence for remaining life it would have been justified by all – I feel so.
