- All the villagers in the country know about Lok Adalat. Supreme Court Justice Sanjiv Khanna proudly said that they are confident that the problems can be resolved. District Legal Services Commission of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry States and a seminar on special training on Arbitration Act 2023 was held in Madras High Court premises. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the seminar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Sanjay V. Gangaburwala said that through the Tamil Nadu Legal Services Commission, we are implementing 19 projects including legal aid, Lok Adalat and legal aid for prisoners. He mentioned that 51,824 applications for legal aid have been received from January 2023 to February 2024 across the state and 48,352 applications have been completed. Also, 863 sittings of Lok Adalat disposed of 3.53 lakh cases. With this, a settlement of Rs 2,652 crore has been made. The first mediation center in the country was set up in Madras High Court. He informed that we are protecting the room where the first center functioned as a memorial center. He also mentioned that while 32 mediation centers are functioning in Tamil Nadu, we are going to start 17 more centers. As mediation clause has been made mandatory in all the laws, he urged to know about the Mediation Act which has been brought in 2023. Supreme Court Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who opened the seminar, said that in 2005, the lawyers had opposed the introduction of mediation. Now the situation has changed. Mediation centers are currently run entirely by lawyers. He said that we have succeeded in 48 percent of this. Supreme Court Justice Sanjiv Khanna stated that Madras High Court is the birthplace of mediation. Mediation requires many skills. Must have legal knowledge. He mentioned that he should know psychology. The judge said that it is my personal opinion that mediation is the best non-biased solution to problems, adding that 2.37 crore cases are pending in the district courts, 20.67 lakh cases in the high courts and 52,660 cases in the Supreme Court.
